Eminent historian Dr Suryya Kumar Bhuyan (1892-1964) was one of the founders of the Department of History and Archeology of the Govt of Assam. Dr Bhuyan was the President of the Shillong Session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1953 and was awarded the 'Padma Shri' by the Govt of India in 1956.
