The 1929 session of the Asom Mohila Somiti was presided over by one of the most progressive women of her time, Narayani Handiqui (1882-1938). The mother of noted scholar Krishna Kanta Handiqui and the wife of tea planter Radha Kanta Handiqui, Narayani Handiqui has worked extensively for women's rights. She was a sister of noted author Padmanath Gohain Barua.
